2: Cruise tourism brings £4.2 million to the Falkland Islands economy - Falklands (Tourism/Travel) - 31.07.2009

Results released today by the Falkland Islands Tourist Board reveal that cruise tourism brought almost £4.2 million revenue into the Falklands in the 2008-9 season. This figure includes spend on tours, shopping, food and beverage, as well as over £1.3 million in the form of government taxes and levies.

Richard McKee of the Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands says that yet again the number of vessels visiting South Georgia increased last season with a total of 70 cruise ship and 25 yachts visits carrying 7,800 passengers. This is a 120% increase in passenger numbers over the last 5 years.

On Monday June 29th GSGSSI received notification that the fishing vessel In Sung 22 had sunk on Saturday June 27th at position 50° 57.4’ S, 37° 42.7’ W. The location was approximately 180 miles north of South Georgia over deep-water (> 4000 m).

A youth that escaped custody earlier today, has been found safe and well. The Royal Falkland Islands Police issued an all points bulletin concerning the youth, who previously escaped police custody at approximately 1410hrs on Thursday, 02 July 2009.

You will know that at the end of that debate the voting of your Elected Members was tied at four for the proposed new Constitution, and four against. The two Ex-Officio Members of Council, the Chief Secretary and the Financial Secretary, have the right to vote under the existing Constitution, but on my instruction did not do so as they are not elected by the people.
