FIVE STUDENTS OFF TO UNIVERSITY SOON

Five former Prince Andrew School students are set to embark on an exciting chapter in their lives when they leave for the UK in August to begin their University/College studies.

This is the largest group of students from the same year group ever to leave for study at the same time and they are due our collective congratulations.

One of these five is Rebecca Lawrence, of Cowpath, who has been awarded a full five year Scholarship under the Commonwealth Scholarship Awards to study for a Veterinary Medicine and Surgery degree at the University of Nottingham.

This is a tremendous achievement for Rebecca as the competition for this Scholarship is high. By becoming a Commonwealth Scholar in the United Kingdom, Rebecca is following in a tradition of almost 19,000 individuals since the scheme began, over fifty years ago.

Speaking with Rebecca on her achievement she commented:

“I am extremely happy to be offered a Commonwealth Scholarship as I know that entries for this are very competitive. Degrees in Veterinary Medicine aren't usually sponsored by the Commonwealth Commission, as they're five/six years, not three like most degrees.

“Being awarded this scholarship for the full five years is an added bonus as now I don't have to look for additional funding to finish my degree. After a year out on my work placement with ANRD Veterinary & Livestock Section, I'm looking forward to getting back into study mode and building on what I've learnt.

“Everyone I've encountered has been totally supportive of me going to study to be a Vet, so now it's up to me to work hard and do well at University.”

Leonie Ellick, Neil Francis, Zedella Young and Jamie Peters must also be recognised for their successful University placements gained through the Prince Andrew Post School Scholarship Award.

Leonie will undertake her study in Business Management & (Marketing) with Bath Spa University. Neil will undertake his Economics and Finance degree with the University of Brighton and Zedella will study for her BA/BSc (Hons) in Human Geography and Journalism/Media with the University of Hertfordshire.

Jamie has part sponsorship from Enterprise St Helena, and will undertake his Motor Vehicle Engineering and Autobody and Paint Refinishing training with Barnfield College in Bedfordshire.

Upon their arrival in the UK, all students will be met by SHG UK Representative, Kedell Worboys who will ensure that they are all ‘on their way’ with family and friends where they will reside, until moving into their University Halls to commence their studies in September. Jamie and Rebecca will be collected by Brian Fredericks who will accompany them on their travel to Hitchin.
