HOWZAT! - GOVERNOR HONOURS ST HELENA CRICKET TEAM
Cricket fever continues on St Helena, as H.E. the Governor and Mrs Capes honoured the Island’s cricket squad and supporters with a reception at Plantation House last Thursday - where the Governor warmly congratulated the team on its recent achievements in South Africa at its first international tournament - the only team to arrive by ship! The team, in return, thanked their supporters, fundraisers and business sponsors, who made the trip possible.
At the recent ICC Africa Division 3 T20 Tournament in Johannesburg, St Helena’s team won 4 of its 8 matches, and if they had scored one more run against the Seychelles, and two more runs against Rwanda, they would have played Zambia in the final!
Despite the fact that cricket has been played on St Helena for more than a century, the squad’s results are all the more remarkable given that it is drawn from a population of only 4000.
Training every day, playing 8 games in 5 days and winning the Fair Play & Commitment Award, the team won the respect of other teams for the standard of their play. They were also regarded as excellent ambassadors for the Island and have proudly put St Helena on the cricketing map.
Two pictures show squad members enjoying the reception at Plantation House.
