A new Magistrates’ Court Ordinance was enacted in November of 2011 and one of the changes made to the law surrounding the Court, was the appointment of a legally qualified Magistrate as the Chief Magistrate.
CHIEF MAGISTRATE ARRIVING ON FRIDAY
A new Magistrates’ Court Ordinance was enacted in November of 2011 and one of the changes made to the law surrounding the Court, was the appointment of a legally qualified Magistrate as the Chief Magistrate.
The new Chief Magistrate is John MacRitchie, who will arrive on St Helena this coming Friday, 29th June 2012, to take up his new role.
John has been appointed on a five year contract and his main duty will be to sit in on any Magistrate Court proceedings either alone or with Justices of the Peace (JPs).
Another significant element of his work will be to train and mentor the JPs and the Officers who administer the Court system. John will also join Derek Richards and Harold Horner as Coroners and will become the Media Standards Commissioner when the Media Standards Ordinance is brought into force in July/August of this year.
