MOTION FOR ADJOURNMENT SPEECH OF THE COMMANDER BRITISH FORCES SOUTH ATLANTIC ISLANDS
I have said it before in this Assembly but may I take the opportunity to state again, what a privilege it is for those of us in the Forces to live and to work in this vibrant and open community.
In an often uncertain world Her Majesty’s Forces remain vigilant to identify and if necessary to prevent any interference with the Falkland Islanders’ rightful activities and enterprises and to support your right of self-determination.
Although the defence perhaps has a higher profile than usual in this 30th Anniversary year, the 1982 Conflict, the level of commitment remains constant no matter what the level of media or regional interest or speculation is.
We also look forward to continuing to participate in the community commemorations of the sacrifice that was made in 1982.
I am grateful to His Excellency the Governor for – in his address earlier this week – highlighting the localisation project. I recognise that this is a long-term initiative but it and the potential provision of Utilities to HM Forces was mentioned earlier this afternoon in the Appropriation Bill represents an important part of the mutual integration of the forces with the rest of the Falkland Islands. And it is encouraging to see these projects progressing.
Similarly, I am extremely grateful to the Government for the planned and very generous contribution of two further married quarters at Mount Pleasant. This will certainly help us increase the number of continuity posts that are so necessary for maintaining and increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of BFSAI.
Mr Speaker, this is an almost uniquely welcoming community and it remains an honour to live in it and to serve and to support its rights and endeavours.
Mr Speaker, I support the Motion.
