Three Human Rights Projects were launched at the Community Library on Tuesday evening. The first was a book and pamphlet project sponsored by the Falkland Islands Human Rights Group, bringing together in one place local and international Human Rights publications on special shelving at the Library. Second, two booklets sponsored by Team Tranquil: “The Falkland Islands Constitution and You” and “Human Rights in the Falkland Islands” in English and Spanish were launched and finally, the Falkland Islands National Human Rights Action Plan and a Report on how the plan was written was made public.
All projects were funded by the Commonwealth Foundation, who offered the money as a result of visits by a Human Rights Training Team in 2009 and 2011 headed by Rosanna Mesquitta.
The Community Library project has several titles to choose from including publications from Amnesty International and the UK Department of Justice. Team Tranquil’s booklets help to inform people about their human rights under the Constitution as well as what rights they have in the international theatre. The Falkland Islands national Human Rights Action Plan sets out several areas where the group can implement human rights projects that target vulnerable and needy people in the community.
Approximately 30 people turned up to the launch including MLAs Halford and Cheek as well as Ralph Jones from Government House and the Attorney General Mr Mark Lewis.
In his remarks to those attending the Rev Dr Richard Hines explained the history behind the projects and went on to say what he hoped their influence would be on the community. The Falkland Islands Human Rights Group has the responsibility to see that points outlined in the plan are addressed.
