Report on the meeting of General Purposes Committee
held on the 27th March 2012
As usual the meeting started with confirmation of the minutes and matters arising from the previous meeting.
As we had around 50 Executive Council Papers to talk through, these being papers for the normal meeting of Executive Council on the 28th March and the Budget Meeting on the 2nd April, I suggested we change the order of the meeting to deal with the rest of the agenda and matters arising before we dealt with these papers.
As there often appears to be confusion with who the MLA for a given period is (chair of the month) we have now decided to change the rotation to a calendar month which will be advertised in advance and hopefully this will make it clearer to one and all. I will therefore now be the Chair until the end of April 2012.
We touched on the attendance at Party Conferences later this year when the Hon Jan Cheek and the Hon Ian Hansen will be representing the Falklands and discussed the possibility of some of our students studying in the UK being able to attend some or all of the conferences on day passes. We will now need to consult with our London Representative, who makes all the arrangements for these events, to see if this is a realistic proposition for this year. It is always good to include members or our younger generation whenever possible, who are going to be our future and are currently proving to be excellent ambassadors for the Falklands.
We also discussed a letter received about the time change and the fact that a petition which had been done in good faith and had not been taken into account during the recent online survey and subsequent decision. Because of this we decided that to answer this question once and for all it would be a good idea to ask the question on the census that will be going out to everyone shortly. This matter was added to the Census Paper and forwarded to Executive Council for consideration.
In the afternoon we met with the Chief Executive to discuss various issues and during this meeting also met with two visiting EU Consultants who are currently here working with the Head of Policy on EU issues.
