St Helena Prepares for Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II came to the throne on 6th February 1952 and this year, 2012, marks The Diamond Jubilee - 60 years of the Queen’s Reign.
In commemoration of this milestone event, the United Kingdom, British Overseas Territories and countries of the Commonwealth will join together in celebrations in an extended weekend on 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th June.
Here on St Helena, a Working Group has been set up to prepare for St Helena’s participation in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations. Members of the Working Group include representatives from the Home and International Committee, the Finance Directorate, Tourism, New Horizons, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Secretariat and the Police Directorate.
The celebrations on St Helena are scheduled for Monday 4th June and will be a 12 hour event running from 10am-10pm.
Celebrations planned for the day will include a parade of all uniformed groups on the Island followed by an interdenominational service held in front of the Court House. All participating in the parade would then do a March Past to end the official ceremony. Diamond Jubilee Medals will be presented to members of the Emergency Services.
For the rest of the day there will be a ‘Village Fair’ in the Grand Parade area where local charities as well as schools will be invited to set up stalls.
St Helena will also be taking part, along with the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, the Commonwealth and other countries around the world, in lighting beacons to mark this historic moment in the Queen’s Reign. The aim is to light 2,012 beacons across the globe on Monday 4th June!
