Leif’s Appalachian Trek for Charity
By J. Brock (FINN)
Leif Middleton will be attempting the Appalachian trail, an estimated 2,175 mile trek through the wilderness of the eastern United States. What almost none will know is that he feels it appropriate in attempting such an endeavour to ask people here in the Falklands to sponsor him a little bit for his chosen charity- the GVI Charitable Trust. Weather permitting Leif will be setting out on the 17th of March from Springer Mountain in northern Georgia, and trek across, mountains, streams, and everything else the wilderness of this part of the United States has to offer until he approaches the summit of Mt. Khatardin in central Maine.
Taking approximately 4-5 months to complete in pristine conditions, (only 10% of those who set out every year do actually complete it), Leif has set a goal of 7 months to complete the trek, as Khatardin becomes closed for the winter and he wouldn’t be able to complete the challenge then.
The GVI Charitable Trust works to combat illiteracy, as well as teaching and disaster relief in many impoverished countries around the world. Leif worked with, and raised money for this charity when he was in Ecuador and it is a worthy cause that he believes in. Whilst there the charity used the money we raise to purchase teaching supplies to teach English and science in extremely isolated, rural communities in eastern Ecuador (Literally towns in the amazon).
“I know a little bit how charity seems to work in the States,” he said, “and I want every American who reads this article to know that is not how I work and it’s not how this charity works. The GVI Charitable Trust will not try and put you on a guilt trip for your hard earned dosh, there won’t be bombardment with letters, TV ads or e-mails associated with this event, bar this one. I am asking for a one off donation to sponsor me for the enormous challenge I have set myself.”

Leif is using resources from both sides of the Atlantic to do this, “so I am sorry for any Americans wanting to give, but it is a BRITISH web site,” he said. This means that it is all done in British pounds sterling and doesn’t stop you donating. There are no transaction fees associated with donating from abroad, but you will be charged at the exchange rate, which is roughly $3 USD for £2pounds. So if you type in £20.00 into the donation amount $30.00 will be taken from your account.
Leif can be contacted through his family at No 5 St Mary’s Walk Phone 21174 or e-mail philmiddleton@horizon.co.fk
