NEWS FROM ST HELENA TOURISM

“A PLACE TO RIVAL EDEN”

This was just one of the comments made by visitors from the MV Melody, which called at the island on Saturday afternoon. There was a range of very positive comments and feedback from the visitors and crew who came ashore and enjoyed the countryside and Jamestown itself. Jamestown itself was busy with the community market reporting a good level of interest, and with shops and eating places also very busy.

A survey of the cruise ship visitors by St Helena Tourism showed that 91% rated their visit Good or Excellent. Almost two-thirds of those questioned had not pre-booked tours, and so did a whole variety of activities, from booking private tours with the taxi operators to exploring Jamestown and climbing Jacob’s Ladder. Indeed one visitor stated that the highlight of his visit was walking up and down Jacobs Ladder twice...despite having artificial knees! For most visitors (97%), it was the first time they had been to St Helena. There was also a high level of satisfaction with their visit as 92% said they would recommend the island to their friends.

Many visitors said they wished they had longer to explore the island, but amongst the highlights mentioned by visitors were Jacob’s Ladder, the Napoleonic sites, Plantation House and the tortoises...but also the welcome they received and the friendliness shown by Saints.

From other comments made it was clear that for many of them St Helena was the highlight of their cruise, with one person saying it was a “must-see destination” and another saying they achieved a life-long ambition. Others said how the island exceeded and went beyond their expectations. Not surprisingly, many said they hoped they could return in the future.

Congratulations go to everyone who made this cruise ship visit so successful.

The next cruise ship to visit the island is the MS Arcadia, which is scheduled to spend all day here on 16 April.
