SEVEN VIETNAMESE CREW SAFE AFTER JUMPING SHIP IN THE FALKLANDS

By J. Brock (FINN)

At approximately 0242 hrs on Sunday, 12 February 2012 seven Vietnamese crewmen off the Taiwanese Jigger, Sing Jung Yu No 8, anchored in Stanley harbour were reported missing to Authorities in the Falkland Islands.

A SeaKing search and rescue helicopter from 1564 Flight at Mount Pleasant Complex was scrambled and arrived at the Stanley football pitch prior to 0500hrs and at first light immediately began searching the harbour shoreline with the aid of launches from the Falkland Islands Company Limited, Beauchene Fishing Limited and Sulivan Shipping Limited.

It wasn’t until 0824hrs on the day that the message came through saying that the crewmen were alive and well.  The Falkland Islands Company, the ship owner’s agents, transported the seven crewmen to the Lighthouse Seamen’s Mission where they had been given a meal.  At the time of writing the crewmen were still at the Mission.

MLA Gavin Short posted the following: "to those of you who are wondering what the activity with launches and the S&R chopper is in the harbour - this is due to a report of missing crewmen from a vessel anchored in the harbour.  And I would like to express my thanks to everyone including the homeland security boys, Fisheries, ship’s agents, the private launches from all the different companies and the search and rescue chopper crew and everyone else involved in the search operation."
