DFID Team on Island
A team from the Department for International Development is on Island to discuss, with SHG, budgets and economic growth for St Helena.
‘DFID is visiting at one of most exciting times because air access is coming,’ said Chief Secretary, Owen O’Sullivan. ‘Much of our discussion will be on preparing for the airport and the opportunities it will bring with particular focus on what needs to be done by SHG, what needs to be done by the private sector and how we can all work together to create the best possible future for St Helena.’
He added ‘I do not expect our discussions to be easy since they are being held at a time when the world is still very much in a financial crisis. We are all having to do more with less but we welcome the visit and will work towards getting the best possible deal for St Helena and its people.’
The DFID team comprises Suzanne Adcock, St Helena Programme Manager, Eddie Palmer, DFID Representative, Dr Mary Thompson, Social Development Adviser, Rick Erlebach, Economic Adviser, and Drew Tetlow, Governance Adviser. They are to be joined by Councillor Tara Thomas, Councillor Derek Thomas, Councillor Cyril Gunnell and the Chief Secretary to discuss future funding for the Island.
A wide range of issues are to be discussed including infrastructure, economic development, tourism, education and health.
The team will meet with a number of people and meetings have already been set up with Councillors, Directors and other stakeholders including the Chamber of Commerce and representatives from other non-Government Organisations.
The team will remain on Island until late February.
