A special reception was given at Government House in honour of Andy Brownlee, who was awarded an MBE at Buckingham Palace this spring (UK autumn).

A special reception was given at Government House in honour of Andy Brownlee, who was awarded an MBE at Buckingham Palace this spring (UK autumn). In his welcoming remarks H. E. the Governor Mr Nigel Haywood expressed the wish that such receptions would be tradition in the future. He explained that previously recipients of Honours like an MBE and OBE had the choice to receive it at Buckingham Palace or at a reception at Government House with their friends.
“This seemed rather a stark choice,” he said. People who have chosen to receive their honour at Buckingham Palace can now have the best of both worlds in that they can be presented the award at Buckingham Palace in a formal setting and celebrate it with friends and family in the Falklands.
The Governor went on to praise Mr Brownlee for all of his work, especially with the Cancer Support and Awareness Trust when he spearheaded the fundraising of £35,000.00 to bring a mammogram machine to the Falklands to screen women for breast Cancer.
Mr Brownlee has been in the Falklands for approximately 28 years and is a retained fireman, Member of the Falkland Islands Defence Force, On the Media Trust as well as a member of various government committees. He is also a Justice of the Peace.
In his remarks, Mr Brownlee thanked the Governor for the reception and said he was glad to see so many of his family and friends present. It was a double honour for Mr Brownlee to tell people he was a Falkland Islander though not born here and that he received his MBE for services to the Falkland Islands.
