Marco Giannangeli’s article entitled, “BRITAIN will use bases in South Africa to regain the Falkland Islands if they are ever captured,” published in the Sunday Express on line, Saturday, 08 October 2011 is an un-researched and ridiculous attempt to stir the pot yet again in the South Atlantic.

To begin with, the photo of HMS Clyde was taken on the South Atlantic Island of South Georgia, some 900 miles ESE of the Falklands. The “impeccable” source not only omitted the name and location of the vessel but also ignored the South Africa and Argentina Agreement on Defence Development and Military Co-operation, signed aboard SAS Drakensberg, which was in Argentina to participate in the naval exercise ATLASUR VIII in November 2010. The agreement was signed by South African Defence Minister Lindiwe Sisulu and her Argentinian counterpart Dr Nilda Garré.
Argentina and Agreements don’t have a good track record but at the moment the country is sticking by this one as it deals favourably with its power base in the South Atlantic. I doubt Argentina would remain quiet if British Military bases appeared in South Africa.
No one on the ground here wants trouble in the South Atlantic and this latest attempt to play “Lets You and Him Fight” is best placed in the rubbish bin.
