COOL LAUNCH FOR ARCHERY IN THE FALKLANDS

By J. Brock (FINN)

The Falklands Archery Association was officially launched at the Narrows Bar on Saturday, 01 October 2011 by the first President, Mr Paul Ellis and the Association’s patron, H. E. the Governor Mr Nigel Haywood.

On Saturday afternoon there was a “Have a Go” session at the Stanley Leisure Centre, where members and the general public were able to use some of the new equipment gifted to the Association by the Leisure Centre.

Though Archery has been a sport in the Falklands it had waned in past years.  But thanks to the Attorney General, Mr Mark Lewis, QC, it has experienced a revival.  Enthusiasts gathered in the Narrows Bar to hear an address by Paul Ellis, who said that the Association were grateful for the gift of equipment from the Leisure Centre.  He went on to say that he was amazed at the resurgence of Archery in the Falklands and it was hoped to send some archers to the Island and Commonwealth Games.

The Association in the Falklands is limited to 30 members and already there are 25 who have joined.

In his remarks, H.E the Governor Mr Nigel Haywood said that he was delighted with archery beginning again in the Falklands and that he hoped it would be both an out of doors and indoors sport.  Indeed we could send members to the Commonwealth Youth Games as well as the others mentioned.

He went on to say that it took enthusiasm and drive to bring the sport forward and he hoped to have full participation during Friday and Sunday sessions.  It is planned to have a paper turkey shoot around Christmastime and an annual challenge cup to be won.
