Falklands : Own Goal for Argentina Over Flights
Submitted by Falkland Islands News Network (Juanita Brock) 23.09.2011 (Article Archived on 07.10.2011)

Jorge Argüello, Argentina’s permanent representative to the United Nations, has confirmed President Cristinea Fernandez de Kirchner’s threat to stop the once a week flight between the Falkland Islands and Argentina.

OWN GOAL FOR ARGENTINA AS AGREED ARGENTINA-FALKLANDS IS THREATENED

By J. Brock (FINN)

Jorge Argüello, Argentina’s permanent representative to the United Nations, has confirmed  President Cristinea Fernandez de Kirchner’s threat to stop the once a week flight between the Falkland Islands and Argentina.

Speaking in New York, Jorge Argüello said; “Why should Argentina keep facilitating British citizens to travel between the islands and mainland Argentina, while the UK refuses to negotiate sovereignty over the archipelago and keeps on appropriating natural resources from it …  it is totally logical if Argentina finally decides to reconsider all agreements signed with the UK.”

The air connection between Punta Arenas in Chile and Mount Pleasant Airport in the Falklands stops off at Río Gallegos, Argentina en-route and it appears to be this stop-over is threatened.

These arrangements came about following the 14 July 1999 Agreement, which facilitated the visit to the Islands by veterans of the Falklands War in October 2009.

Curtailment of the flights would seriously affect those travelling from Argentina to next year’s 30th anniversary events on the Falklands, particularly the relatives of the Argentine dead. Other flights between the UK and Stanley via Ascension Island operate on a regular basis.
