Government House announced on Thursday, 08 September 2011 the appointment of Mr Carl Gumsley as Senior Magistrate for the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands and the British Antarctic Territory.
He has experience in a number of areas of law including crime, civil, family and mental health amongst others.
As well as fulfilling his roles as a barrister and a judge, he has lectured and tutored at the local university. He is also a member of the Ministry of Justice project “You be the Judge” which seeks to bring a greater understanding of the Criminal Justice System to the public and introduces students from local universities and schools to the court system.
Commenting on his appointment, Mr Gumsley said “I am extremely excited and very honoured to have been appointed as the new Senior Magistrate. I had been looking to concentrate on my judicial career more and this is a fantastic opportunity which will allow me to do what I love, against the background of the stunning beauty of the Falkland Islands, its incredible wildlife and the legendary hospitality of the people. I am looking forward to dealing with the variety of different areas of law which the post demands. I hope I will serve the people of the Islands well. I am particularly looking forward to putting what 4 x 4 skills I have to the test and learning how the real experts do it. I have also promised myself that I will finally learn the saxophone”.
Mr Gumsley is a practising barrister and Crown Court Recorder and presently practices from his Chambers in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, where he lives; and is due to arrive on Thursday 27 October. He is married to Jackie who has a daughter, Emma. Emma will be staying in the UK to complete her degree. However, they will be accompanied by their two dogs, an elderly and grumpy Westie (Bonnie) and a youthful and enthusiastic Labrador (Betty).
