MISS EMMA EDWARDS MLA RELINQUISHES TOURISM PORTFOLIO

By J. Brock (FINN)

Six Members of the Legislative Assembly have discussed current difficulties within the FITB portfolio and the Falkland Islands Government has agreed a Tourism Development Strategy.

This strategy document was formulated by a tourism strategy group, was consulted on and presented to the FITB and approved by the FITB. Following this, it was also approved by Executive Council as a formal government policy document.

However, it is clear that the Hon Emma Edwards has always held deep reservations about certain aspects of the strategy and is quite clearly opposed to official policy in some areas.

The tourism portfolio holder is an elected Member whose duty is to carry out agreed policy. The Hon Emma Edwards’ fundamental opposition to some areas of the policy has led to her position becoming untenable. For this reason, it was decided to transfer the tourism portfolio responsibility to the Hon Mike Summers.

If any Member does hold deeply opposing views to any approved FIG policy, then we would not expect that Member to continue in a post whose role is to promote and further those aims.

Distribution of portfolio responsibilities is the choice of elected Members, as is the decision to remove a colleague should we feel that there is no other option. We very much regret that the Hon Emma Edwards has not chosen to meet and discuss any issues with us.
