Visiting Gynaecologist for Health & Social Welfare Directorate

Currently working in the Health & Social Welfare Directorate is Dr Mary Packer. She will be on Island until 12 August 2011 as a visiting Gynaecologist.

Dr Packer studied in Aberdeen University, graduating MB ChB in 1982. Over the years she has gained wide experience in many aspects of women’s reproductive health and has worked in hospital Obstetrics and Gynaecology, General Practice, Family Planning & Well Woman services and in Genito-Urinary Medicine.

In 2000, three years after gaining membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists Dr Packer obtained a Certificate of Completed Specialist Training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from the then Specialist Training Authority of the UK. She also holds a Diploma of the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Health of the Royal College and is an accredited Colposcopist with certification from the British Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology.

In 2001, after a period of 20 months working at consultant level in the UK, Dr Packer joined her husband in Kosovo and has been involved in clinical issues and project management of women and children’s health programmes.

Dr Packer said:

“My main contributions have been in setting up three Women’s Wellness Centres that are still functioning effectively up to eight years on. Last year, I helped to found the Kosovo Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology. I still travel regularly back to the UK to keep my skills and knowledge up to date. This is my first trip to St Helena and I am grateful for the opportunity to meet and work with people and patients from the island.”

Dr Packer has three children – a son working with Edinburgh City Council in the social housing department; a daughter who is a primary teacher and a younger daughter who has just graduated as a vet. Dr Packer is delighted to share that come September she and her husband will welcome their first grandchild into the world.
