NEWS FROM ST HELENA TOURISM SAINTS FLOCK TO LONGWOOD HOUSE

Over 200 people took advantage of a gloriously sunny day to visit Longwood House on Saturday, when it was open all day to the public. The gardens and the House itself were at their best, and visitors were able to see and appreciate the many different aspects of Napoleon’s legacy that attracts many tourists to St Helena. Several Saints had never visited the House before, and many had not been since they were children at school.

The Open Day, which was jointly organised by the Longwood Support Group and St Helena Tourism, was felt to be a great success by everyone. The event was held as part of the island’s Save Longwood House campaign, which is supporting the international fund-raising activities for the restoration of the Generals’ Quarters part of the House.

Even though entrance to the Open Day was free, there was a raffle and other competitions, and visitors could also make a donation to the campaign. In addition, refreshments were provided by Harford Community Centre, who were able to raise funds for local activities. Over £350 was raised towards the island campaign. People can continue to make donations to the campaign through the Tourist Office or at the Bank of St Helena. It was also announced that the profit from the recent Napoleonic Tour to the island by French tourists has been donated to the international campaign. The island campaign will continue next month with a Napoleonic theme treasure hunt...so watch out for details soon!

The attached pictures show the gardens at Longwood, and the teams involved in making the Open Day such a success.
