St Helena : Did a Councillor Medal with St Helena Media?
Submitted by Saint Helena Herald (Public Relations Information Office) 10.07.2011 (Article Archived on 24.07.2011)

Concerns have been expressed over recent reports that a Councillor interfered with the editorial policy of the broadcast media on St Helena.

Press Statement

Concerns have been expressed over recent reports that a Councillor interfered with the editorial policy of the broadcast media on St Helena. The Governor in Council would like to assure members of the public that an individual Councillor has no power to do this, nor does the Council as a whole.

The Governor in Council could intervene, but only as the Regulatory Authority for Broadcasters on St Helena. Broadcasters are required to comply with a News and Current Affairs Code and the Programme Code, which is a set of media standards similar to those used in the UK. The Governor in Council can only intervene if the codes are not complied with.

While the provision exists, the Governor in Council was not involved in the recent allegations.
