General Purposes Committee 29 June Report

By Jan Cheek, MLA

Only four members were available for this meeting, with the Honourable Dick Sawle and the Honourable Bill Luxton overseas, the Honourable Gavin Short at work and the new member not yet sworn in.

August public meetings on East and West Falkland were confirmed. The meeting  previously planned for W. Falkland a few months ago was cancelled when it was discovered that it clashed with another event so accommodation would have been tight.

We reviewed Executive Council Papers, Gavin Short will be reporting on Thursday’s meeting.

We discussed who would stand in for me for four meetings at the end of July and in early August when I plan to take some holiday.

There was then some discussion of a suggestion from a member of the public that the proposed new phased housing development be named in recognition of HM the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with perhaps in addition the street names having a royal theme.

The greater part of the morning was taken up with a conference call with London Representative Sukey Cameron and PR company Edelman who have both public relations and public affairs (political lobbying) contracts for the Falkland Islands Government. We discussed the on-going work plans for things like press briefings which are particularly important so that there is a well-informed response when stories break. They also work proactively to place stories. We anticipate more press visits including more members of the international press. We agreed that there will be, as a trial, a stand at the Liberal Democrat Conference as well as Labour and Conservative conferences this year. We will assess its value and whether to revert to just visiting in future years.
