Understanding Human Rights

During the period 19th to 25th July an important opportunity exists for anyone interested to learn more about and participate in some introductory training in basic Human Rights. The project is an initiative sponsored by the UK’s Commonwealth Human Rights Institute and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and being made available to all the UK Overseas Territories. It follows on from a previous round of human rights training which took place in March 2010.
As well as raising awareness of human rights in the community, last year's training also led to several tangible outcomes:-
- the publication by the Courts of a leaflet about the Falkland Islands legal aid scheme
- a grant from the Commonwealth Human Rights Institute for the compilation of a library of books and leaflets on human rights issues (this project is being led by Richard Hines and Colleen Biggs)
- a grant from the Commonwealth Human Rights Institute for the publication of leaflets explaining in plain English and Spanish the fundamental rights set out in the Falkland Islands Constitution (a project led by Karen Rimicans and Team Tranquil)
This year's training sessions will again be open to everyone. Certain sessions are focused on particular groups (health & education, law enforcement officers, teachers) while other sessions are aimed at the general public and will include:-
- *an introduction to human rights for anyone who wants to learn more about the subject
- *the practical application of human rights, with case studies relevant to the Falkland Islands
- *the role of civil society in protecting human rights
- *human rights in policy making (this session is aimed at business leaders and FIG heads of service).
The various sessions and training will be widely publicised nearer the time, but if anyone is interested in receiving a copy of the timetable, once it is available, or would like to know more at this stage, please contact: Alison Inglis (Tel: 22817) or Richard Hines (Tel: 21100).
