Alice Greentree retires from the Education Department
Former Education Officer (Primary), Alice Greentree, has retired from the Education Department after forty one years.
Alice began her career in January 1970 as a Teacher Trainee; she successfully completed her training in 1971 and was posted to Country Senior School as Pupil Teacher. Over the following three years Alice taught in Pilling Senior School then at the Secondary Selective School. In 1974 Alice was promoted from Pupil Teacher to Teacher and transferred to Jamestown Junior School.
Alice continued to climb the career ladder being promoted to Teacher 3 in 1981 and then Teacher 2 in 1984. Another transfer saw Alice return to Pilling Senior School.
From 1986 she held a Post of Responsibility in Home Economics and between 1988 and 1991 Alice was Acting Head Teacher on two occasions. In 1988 she was actively involved in the changeover from a two to three tier system.
In 1993 and in 1999 Alice undertook overseas training in Management, National Curriculum Delivery and Development, School Attachment, Leadership and Management, Curriculum Development and School Improvement.
In 1997 Alice was appointed to Head teacher of St Paul’s Middle School.
2000 saw the Amalgamation of St Pauls’ First and Middle Schools and Alice played a key role in this process heading the school until it reverted to a Middle School again in 2003. Her headship continued until January 2007, during which time in 2006 Alice had taken on additional responsibility for the Primary Sector in the absence of an Education Officer. This gave her much experience and the aspiration to become a Senior Manager within the department.
Since January 2007 Alice has been the Education Officer (Primary) during which time she was heavily involved in restructuring and reorganisation of the primary sector and bringing in vertical grouped teaching.
In December 2008 to February 2009 and again in November 2010 to February 2011 Alice has shared responsibility for the Education Department as Acting Chief Education Officer in the absence of the substantive post holder.
Reflecting on her time in Education Alice found it challenging and rewarding. On occasions she considered changing career but decided that nothing else could give such challenge, variety, satisfaction and rewards.
Alice said:
“When you’re a teacher you always want what is best for the children and it is rewarding when you can feel that you have helped in some way to make a difference in their lives. You feel proud when you know those children have made achievements and progressed even if in a small way. I have many memorable times during my career. The children and colleagues I worked with over the years have been truly wonderful.
Education will always be very close to my heart and I wish everyone continued success. Education never stands still and as the Department’s logo boldly states it goes ‘FROM DISCOVERY TO DISCOVERY”. I am privileged to have been a part of that amazing discovery.”
Lilla Oliver, Director of Education and Employment said:
“As an Education Department, we would like to earnestly thank Alice for the hard work, commitment and dedication that she has given over the forty one years that she has worked in our Department. We wish her every success as she retires and hope that her new chapter in her life will be equally as rewarding as the last forty one years have been.”
