OUTSTANDING EVENING OF CHORAL MUSIC AT THE CATHEDRAL

By J. Brock (FINN)

An outstanding evening of choral music took place at Christ Church Cathedral on Tuesday, 22 February 2011.  Dr Hayden James directed the all-male “Comrades” choir, accompanied by David Last on keyboard and organ.  Miss Jamie Hutchinson, an exquisite violinist who works professionally as a session musician in London with the likes of Ronan Keating and “Take That” played a series of tunes- Welsh, Cossack and from other countries.

According to the MC, Mark Burroughs, the choir have been travelling throughout South America and have made the Falklands one of their venues.  Rev Richard Hines of Christ Church Cathedral arranged accommodation for the choir at short notice.

The music was an excellent mix of Negro Spirituals and standard Hymns like “My Lord Loves Me Like Thunder,” and “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross,” as well as classical music from Faust.  Show tunes and modern music accentuated the performance.

If you missed out on Tuesday night, the Cathedral will be the venue for an hour of hymns performed by the audience as well as the choir and accompanying musicians.  The (gavanmacghani) will take place on Friday evening from 1930 to 2030 hrs.  All are welcome.
