ASCENSION ISLAND GOVERNMENT


His Excellency the Acting Governor has given notice that a General Election shall be held on Friday 25th February 2011. He has also given notice that the date by which nominations shall be received by the Returning Officer at the Administration Office in Georgetown shall be Friday 11th January 2011. 


Nomination forms are now available from the Returning Officer – Alan Nicholls, Assistant Registration Officer – Nicola Dillon or AIG’s Administration Office in Georgetown.

If you haven’t yet decided on a candidate to represent your interests on the Island Council, you should act now and don’t leave it too late and miss out. You have until 6pm on Friday 11 February 2011 to choose and nominate your candidate. Therefore, don’t delay, get your form now!


 


Nomination forms can be obtained from the Returning Officer, Alan Nicholls, the Administrator’s Office or Miss Nicola Dillon, Assistant Registration Officer. Completed forms should be returned to the Returning Officer during normal working hours and in any event, by no later than 6pm on Friday 11 February 2011.


This is your chance to have your say over decisions that need to be made on the next year’s Budget, on Reforms to Employment Law, the Draft Child Welfare Bill and many other issues.


 


 


GENERAL ELECTION


 


CRITERIA TO STAND AS A COUNCILLOR


 


 


To qualify for election as a Councillor you must:


 


a.     have attained the age of 21 years and be eligible to vote in the election for which you are nominated; and


 


b.     be a British Overseas Territories Citizen, British Overseas Citizen or British Citizen who:


 


i.    resides on Ascension Island;


ii    has resided for at least 12 months immediately preceding the date of nomination for election; and


iii    is registered as a voter on the Register of Electors.


 Disqualifications for elected membership


 


The Island Government (Ascension) Ordinance 2008 sets out certain disqualifications for elected membership and refers to persons:


 


a.           who have been convicted of an election offence; or


b.            who have within five years immediately preceding the date of election, served a     sentence of imprisonment of 12 months or more; or


c.             who holds, or is acting in, any public office designated by the Governor; (a list of such public offices can be obtained from the Administrator’s Office.)

NOMINATIONS


 


If you should wish to nominate someone to represent you on the Island Council, you can collect a nomination form from the Returning Officer, Alan Nicholls, at AIG’s Administration Building in Georgetown. Please ensure that the completed form is returned by no later than 6pm on Friday 11th February 2011 (the closing time and date for the receipt of nominations).


 


When completing a nomination form, please ensure the names of the candidate, the proposer and the seconder are on the Register of Electors. 


 


The signatures of the proposer and seconder should be witnessed in the presence of a Justice of the Peace or by the Returning Officer. The candidate’s signature may be witnessed by someone of his or her choice.


 


To find out if you are on the Register of Electors please contact the Assistant Registration Officer, Miss Nicola Dillon on telephone number 7000 extension 131. Copies of Registers can also be found on the Public Notice boards at the Two Boats Club and the AIG Admin Building.
