Fourteen crew members aboard HMS Glamorgan who died in the 1982 Conflict with Argentina were remembered with the unveilling of a memorial rock of polished Welsh granite at Hookers’ Point in the Falklands. The ceremony took place at Hookers’ Point, with thirty-six members of the HMS Glamorgan (Falklands) Association and family members as well as several representatives of the Falklands’ community present.
After the unveiling there was a reception given by members of the HMS Glamorgan (Falklands) Association at Hillside Camp where Captain Michael Barrow explained that the site at Hookers’ Point faces the spot where HMS Glamorgan was hit by an Exocet missile on 12 June 1982. At the time the HMS Glamorgan was returning to the open sea after shelling Two Sisters. As the vessel was travelling at speed the missile hit above the water line near the Helicopter deck.
While in the Falklands Association Members and families took a battlefield tour as well as visiting areas of interest on East Falkland. On Wednesday evening H. E. the Governor Mr Nigel Haywood hosted a reception for the thirty-six visitors at Government House.
In his remarks H. E. the Governor Mr Haywood thanked host families for looking after visitors so well.
