Falklands : TWO FROM CHARTRES IN DEADLY ROAD ACCIDENT

At 8pm on Saturday 22nd January 2011, the Royal Falkland Islands Police (RFIP) received a report of a one vehicle road traffic collision involving a Land Rover 110 motor vehicle on the Hill Cove Road, West Falkland.
TWO FROM CHARTRES IN DEADLY ROAD ACCIDENT

At 8pm on Saturday 22nd January 2011, the Royal Falkland Islands Police (RFIP) received a report of a one vehicle road traffic collision involving a Land Rover 110 motor vehicle on the Hill Cove Road, West Falkland.
Members of the West Falkland First Response Team attended the scene and dealt with two casualties.
1. Alistair Daem MINTO, 51 years, from Chartres, West Falkland. Born Stanley, Falkland Islands.
2. Gilbert (Gil) GILES, 63 years, from Chartres, West Falkland. Born Aberdeen, Scotland.
Sadly, Mr GILES was pronounced dead at the scene. Mr MINTO sustained serious neck and spinal injuries. Both men were airlifted by a British International Helicopter to the King Edward Hospital in Stanley. Mr MINTO was medically evacuated to Chile on Sunday 23rd January.
A Military doctor, member of RAF Fire & Rescue Team and a British Military Special Investigation Branch (SIB) Crime Scene Investigator (CSI) attended the scene. The CSI undertook an initial assessment prior to a fuller examination on Sunday 23rd January. Arrangements are being made for a RFIP vehicle examiner to inspect the vehicle.
Next of Kin and the Coroner have been informed.
Commenting on the collision, Director of Community Safety and Chief Police Officer Gary Finchett said, “This was an excellent response from the West Falkland First Response Team and the Military which was not without its challenges. Enquiries into the circumstances of the collision are continuing and a report is being compiled for the Coroner. Our thoughts are with the families and friends of both men at this time”.
