Falklands Smoking Ban starts at 6am on 1 February 2011
The Smoking (Prohibition) Ordinance comes into force at 6am on 1 February 2011.
From then, smoking will be banned in:
enclosed public places (including pubs, restaurants, social clubs, hotels and shops)
enclosed workplaces
public vehicles (taxis and buses)
This law applies throughout the Falkland Islands (including at Mount Pleasant) and there are very few exceptions. It also affects businesses run from home.
There will also be requirements to display no smoking signs. Sample signs that comply with these requirements can be downloaded from the internet.
Guidance about signs and the smoking ban generally is being produced for employers, licensees and other target audiences. That will be sent out over the next few days. There will be other publicity for the introduction of the smoking ban (such as interviews on Falklands Radio and BFBS).
Why
The smoking ban is being introduced because second-hand smoke kills. It also causes lung cancer, heart disease and respiratory illnesses in adults and a variety of conditions in children. To tie in with the introduction of the smoking ban, the KEMH will be running a health promotion campaign to encourage people to give up smoking and to offer them help to do it.
If someone breaks the law
The law will be upheld by the Royal Falkland Islands Police and the Joint Service Provost and Security Unit (JSPSU). Anyone who breaks the law could be prosecuted or issued with a fixed penalty notice.
