SOUTH GEORGIA POSSESSION DAY OBSERVED AT GOVERNMENT HOUSE

By J. Brock (FINN)

The possession of South Georgia for King George and his heirs by Captain James Cook 236 years ago was noted by a reception at Government House on Wednesday night.  In his remarks the Commissioner of South Georgia, Mr Nigel Haywood, mentioned that Captain James Cook sailed into 3 locations, one of which was Possession Bay, to proclaim the Island as part of the British Empire; and said that the rounds of musket fire - even then – made environmentalists cringe.

In his remarks Mr Haywood mentioned that recently there has been a decline in fishing and tourism and future development strategies needed to be discussed as well as a programme for wildlife protection.  He added that the rat eradication programme for the Island was going ahead.
