R Company, 4th Battalion, the Rifles officially took over from Number 3 Company, 1st Battalion

Welsh Guards on 5th August. Returning from Afghanistan at the end of 2009 the Company was deployed to set the conditions for the presidential elections and worked closely with the Welsh Guards.

The Command team of R Company laid a wreath at San Carlos on behalf of their ex-Commanding

Officer Lieutenant Colonel Rupert Jones, son of Lt Col Huw Jones whose body lies at Goose Green. Although the weather was rather cold and windy, the cemetery “did not fail to evoke emotion” said Major James Gaynor, Officer in Command. “So peaceful and beautifully maintained the cemetery afforded a rather poignant experience for us, the Union Jacks flying was quite iconic.

Lieutenant Colonel Rupert Jones is no longer with the in command of the Regiment and has now moved on to work at the MOD.

Captain Harris, Second in Command of R Company, said that their deployment here “has already

provided fantastic opportunities for our Junior Commanders to step up to the mark and to not only work with other units but other Services very closely. This environment provides real challenges and we are very much enjoying our time here”.
