Acts of Bravery Recognised
On an isolated island such as St Helena, any unusual incident or tragedy affects most, if not all, of the community and there are some who go to great lengths to ensure rescue/closure for many. In so doing, these people put their own lives in great danger clambering over rocks and cliffs, sometimes suspended by ropes, or braving the sea, be it calm or rough, in bright sunshine or under cover of darkness to search for a missing person or rescue/retrieve person/ as a result of an incident. Some of these people are dedicated Land, Fire & Sea Rescue teams, while others have reacted willingly to a call for help and, while they are thanked for their efforts, few have in the past been publicly recognised for such brave and unselfish acts.
However, on the evening of Thursday, 8th July 2010, at a reception at Plantation House, His Excellency Governor Gurr, honoured a number of people for performing Act/s of Bravery by presenting each of them with a certificate for showing great courage in the face of danger to their own lives and under very difficult circumstances. He expressed the gratitude of the whole island and indicated that this particular presentation covered past years; in future nominations for such an award will be called for on an annual basis.
