Jamestown Wharf Improvement Programme Starts Soon
After a great deal of preparation and planning, construction work is about to start on site for the much anticipated and necessary wharf improvements at the South and North ends of Jamestown Wharf.
Mr Paul McDermott and Mr Peter Gibson, two engineers from the designers Nicholas O’Dwyer & Co Ltd, an Irish Consultant Engineering company and, Mr Tim Gould and Mr Remi Bruneton, two representatives from the French contracting company CAN France, arrived at Jamestown aboard the RMS St Helena on 24th June. Since their arrival they have been busy meeting with officials and wharf user groups, familiarising themselves with and surveying the site, testing materials and visiting local quarries and stone suppliers. Paul has since returned to Ireland while Peter remains here to supervise the works.
Two further representatives from CAN France arrived on the RMS St Helena today 14th July, along with equipment and materials. Following unloading and assembly of this equipment, work will start in earnest to provide more space for wharf operations. It is envisaged that at least 10 Saints will be engaged to work on the project. 39 persons expressed interest and those short-listed will be interviewed soon. It is envisaged that the start date for most successful applicants will be in the second half of August once all the required materials and equipment have arrived.
Access arrangements during the construction period have been discussed and agreed with key stakeholders, with the intention of minimising any inconvenience to all wharf users. Far less disruption is likely to take place than that experienced during the cliff stabilisation works above the Wharf in 2008. A traffic management plan for the delivery of large quantities of stone and rock armour to the Wharf is being prepared by the contractor and will be submitted to the appropriate authorities for approval before this operation commences.
The Orange, CAN’s own ship, is due to arrive at St Helena from the French Mediterranean port of Sete in mid-August with further supplies of equipment and materials for the works.
The contract for this phase of the work is expected to be completed in February 2011.
