Maths Trainer Arrives on 24 June
Education is one of the most important factors in the development of any country and, here on St Helena, against a backdrop of dwindling resources and skills, the Education Department continues to strive to provide quality learning opportunities for all.
In order to achieve their goals, it is sometimes necessary to seek off shore assistance and, to this end the Education Department has engaged a Maths Trainer, Margaret Barnard to assist with the training of key personnel.
Margaret will be arriving at St Helena on the 24th June and will be on island from the 24th June – 16th July 2010. Her time here will be fully occupied in training our secondary mathematics teachers and other personnel in Key Stage 3, 4 and 5 mathematics. The training will include lesson planning, strategies for effective teaching and learning, strategies for assessing pupil progress, use of data for setting targets and other important teaching and classroom management techniques. By the end of the training period, it is hoped that key personnel will be fully competent and confident to teach Key stage 3, 4 and 5 mathematics.
In conjunction with the training programme and in partnership with teachers and education officers, Margaret will also assist with the development of revised schemes of work and programmes of study for secondary maths teachers, prepare guidelines for assessing and monitoring pupil progress and develop a training pack and action plan for the changeover between key stage 2 and key stage 3 maths.
A Parents’ Evening is also being planned to take place before Margaret’s departure on the 15th July. The date and time of the Parents Evening will be advised later.
