Advisers Visits to St Helena

In the report by the substantive Chief Secretary issued on 29^th April, he gave a brief overview of the visits by advisers for the first quarter of this year.  Omitted from that report was mention of the visit of Mr James Clarke, a United Nations volunteer who arrived on 8 February.  James is based in the Employment & Social Security Department and working under the UNDP project for training and integration of the vulnerable into the work place.  He will be on Island for about seven months and his primary task is to produce a document for approval by SHG outlining a long term sustainable strategy to enable the vulnerable to be trained and integrated into the work place and society

The following is a further brief overview of adviser’s visits during the last two months.  15^th May saw the arrival of a number of visitors.  Firstly, there was Ms Jan Thompson who was on island for some time last year assisting at the Prison while Nicky Crowie, the Deputy Superintendent of Gaols was on overseas training.  Ms Thompson will be on island until October assisting with the operation of the prison  and developing the prisoner rehabilitation programme.

Secondly, Mr Hendry Jansen, Laboratory Engineer, arrived for a one week visit.  Mr Jansen works for the company who supplied all the main equipment for the Medical Laboratory and was here to carry out the annual servicing of the equipment.  He also assisted with some of the equipment in the Hospital.

Thirdly, two Engineers, Ms Ruth Kemsley and Mr Johnathan Oguntona, came for a three week visit.  They are from a company called Senergy Consultants who have been engaged on a consultancy contract to provide technical, procurement and management support for the Energy 2 Infrastructure project.  They will leave the Island on 6^th June

Lastly, on 15^th May, Ms Maggie Langdale arrived for one week primarily on a familiarisation visit.  Ms Langdale works for the Shropshire Local Authority and is the Education Department’s lead School Link Adviser under the Education Support Service Project 2.  She also worked with the Department on issues relating to improving the quality of teaching and learning.

Mr Viv Neary arrived on 22^nd May for two weeks.  This is Mr Neary’s fourth visit to the Island.  He is the Project Manager for DFID’s Safeguarding Children in the Overseas Territories Project with responsibility for the South Atlantic region and will be working with the Public Health & Social Services Department and other agencies.

Forthcoming visitors will include Mrs Caroline Basham-Jones who will arrive on 3^rd June to work with the Education Department as the NVQ External Verifier and from 14^th July Mr Keith Munns, the FCO Prison Adviser will visit for one week to review progress since his last visit in February 2009.
