Governor Gurr To Visit Ascension Island,

 United Kingdom and Capetown

His Excellency Governor Gurr departed St Helena earlier today enroute to the UK, on leave and overseas business. During his stopover at Ascension Island, he will take the opportunity to discuss a number of Ascension issues with the Administrator, Councillors and other officials.

Following his arrival in the UK, the Governor will attend a series of planned, high level meetings with various officials within the Department for International Development (DFID) including Sue Wardell, Malcolm Geere and Richard Haviland who were recently on island discussing budget issues and various DFID funded projects.

The Governor will also meet with Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) officials Andrew Allen, Colin Roberts and Sharon Wright.  In addition, he plans to meet with Ian Thompson of Argos to discuss matters affecting the fishing industry.

Another important area for discussion will be shipping. Leading on from the recent public meeting held by Governor Gurr at the Jamestown Community Centre, the Governor will be taking the opportunity to meet Julian Morris and representatives of St Helena Line to discuss various shipping issues including possible options for the future.

Following his visit to the UK, the Governor will take the opportunity to meet with St Helena’s South African Commercial Representative, Adam Kowssowski and other persons when he visits Capetown at the end of May, enroute to St Helena.

During Governor Gurr’s absence from the island Andrew Wells, Chief Secretary, will perform the duties of Governor’s Deputy for the period 28 April to 2 May and thereafter as Acting Governor until His Excellency returns to St Helena on 3 June.

Gillian Francis, Deputy Chief Secretary will be appointed Acting Chief Secretary during the time Andrew Wells is Acting Governor and Bobby Essex and Sandra Sim will share the duties of the Deputy Chief Secretary.
