IMPROVEMENT IN DARKDALE INCIDENT
Since our last report on 4 March 2010, the St Helena Government has continued to monitor closely the oil leak from the wreck of the 'Darkdale'. Divers have explored the extent of the problem, and some signs of improvement have been noted. However, the results of tests of both water and fish from the affected area are awaited from South Africa.
A spokesman from the Office of the Chief Secretary said today "we are aware that the coming Maundy Thursday is traditionally a big day for fishing on the Island. Because we cannot yet say with certainty that the water is safe, and since there remains the possibility of further leakage, all concerned are still advised against fishing in the affected area and, in particular, not eating fish caught there.”
