PUBLIC CONFIDENCE DEMONSTRATION TO TAKE PLACE ON SAPPER HILL

A Report for FIRS by Stacey Bragger (SB) 18/03/10

A public confidence demonstration will be taking place at the Sapper Hill Minefield site next Thursday at 1545hrs. BACTEC and the Demining Project office staff will walk across the cleared area to demonstrate their confidence in the clearance process. They encourage as many people as possible to come and watch.

In this week’s demining news, 60 mines have been located this week at Surf Bay including the 900th mine there. This brings the grand total for both the Surf Bay and Sapper Hill sites to 1106 mines.

Operations started on the Goose Green promontory at the start of last week. Although all mines are believed to have been lifted from there immediately after the war and the promontory was not marked as a minefield, some British soldiers drove over a mine on the 31st of July 1982 at the end of the promontory and from that point on it has been classified as a mined area. BACTEC are conducting what are termed “technical surveys” to establish whether any mines remain there. No mines have been located to date.

In other demining news, Programme manager, Robin Swanson, says that the road to Surf Bay from today will be closed until 1830hrs for the next few weeks. He says that this is due to mechanical clearance taking place, which cannot be done during the day due to the need to have safety distances for the demining staff.
