NEW NAME SOUGHT FOR MALVINA HOUSE HOTEL
By Tom Swales
Following on from the Company's press release that it was going to change the name of the Malvina House Hotel, a very lively and at times heated debate has begun both from both those who wish for us to change the name and those who do not want us to change it. We welcome the debate as it demonstrates the hotel is an important part in the Islands economic, cultural and social life.
Since we bought the hotel from the Rendell's in January 2004, we have built on the excellent work undertaken by them. During the first month of ownership we received a formal request from a member of the public asking us to change the name of the hotel. Over the past six years people have recognized the changes that have been made but a number of them always asked when we are going to change the name. We took the view that we would sometime in the future consider the change in name but were very focused on refurbishing the hotel and increasing the beds available, improving the restaurant and so on.
The completion of the new 20 bedroom extension has doubled the size of the hotel and we are working through a number of operational and practical issues which the changes in size have brought. One of the areas under discussion is to create separate and clear identities for both the Restaurant and bar, both of which have existing names already ie The Conservatory Restaurant and The Beagle Bar but are not widely used or indeed recognized.
We hope in the next 24 months to extend the restaurant and bar/lounge areas and it seems logical that we revisit the existing names and see if we should create new names and thus images to reflect the changes. Coupled with this we are in the middle of redesigning our web site and again it seems perfectly logical to consider changing the name of the hotel to reflect the changes being made by the Company.
Please be assured that this possible name change is not an attack on Falkland Culture/History/Heritage or in reaction to any Argentine statements that have recently come from Buenos Aires. Regardless of the existing hotel's name we would at this stage be considering a name change. Indeed if we change the name obviously we will be looking at the history and culture of the Islands and all three names will reflect that.
As part of this process we would ask as many people to give us their views on the following:
a) Proposed new name of the Hotel
b) Proposed name of restaurant
c) Proposed name of Bar/Lounge
d) Keep the existing name of the Hotel
I would ask your readers to give us their comments either via email as below or please send them to Gary Perrens or Carl Stroud at the Hotel by the 2nd April 2010.
