ARGY BARGY – THIS TIME WE AIN’T GONNA EAT IT

An Editorial by J. Brock (FINN)

Islanders are reading with disbelief the daily media offerings touting Argy blockades and an impending task force cutting its way towards the Falklands.  Students, seasoned by this are calling home anyway to see if their parents, siblings and friends are OK.

Still we read articles like the one by Tom Newton Dunn in the Sun about a British Military build-up that quite frankly isn’t going to happen.  Mr Dunn uses HMS Scott (the replacement ship for HMS Endurance) as an example of the fire-power we are sending down – and an oil tanker -?!?  Who’s he trying to kid, I say with tongue lightly pressed upon cheek.

Falkland Islanders have the assurance of a succession of British Government officials since 1982 that “HMG has no doubt about British sovereignty over the Falkland Islands and we're clear that the Falkland Islands Government is entitled to develop a hydrocarbons industry within its waters,” or words to that effect.

If we, like Will Rogers, know only what we glean the papers, Heaven help us.  One day we are embattled – fighting for our very existence and the next – Bennies.  Thanks but no thanks for the varied menu – pickles on ice cream – eat it guys and gals – it’s good for you.  Yes, it makes eye-catching copy - sells newspapers – and gives us the bellyache.

Come on, folks, get real.  We recognise that things aren’t the best between us and Argentina but why make things worse?  What you are writing makes gruel a tempting feast.
