SWINE FLU GUIDELINES OUTLINED BY CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER

A basic set of guidelines has been set out for coping with the impending pandemic of swine flu by the Chief Medical Officer, Dr Roger Diggle.

The pandemic flu plan begins with asking that people thinking of travelling to Mexico or the Southern United States consider not going at this time.

Stocks of relevant medicines are available in the Falklands to help cope with the flu, should it become an epidemic here.

Relevant protective equipment is also available to medical staff.

Dr Diggle told FIRS that on Tuesday afternoon a meeting with KEMH staff will take place to review policies and procedures to ensure everybody needing to be familiar with the plan.

A meeting with the wider authorities – Government, Foreign Office and Mount Pleasant staff will also take place.  Mount Pleasant will be especially at risk as it is a point of entry from the South American mainland.

According to Sky News, the World-wide Alert has been classed as Category 4.
