Successful Progress Review for FICS

The progress review of the Falkland Islands Community School has concluded that overall the school has made satisfactory progress and that their capacity to improve further is judged as good.

The review considered the progress the school had made against the Key Recommendations for Action in the November 2007 Inspection Report.

Successful progress has been made in the areas of safeguarding pupils; teaching and learning; leadership and management and good progress with considerable improvement has been made in the behaviour of students, with incidences of bullying much reduced and no longer raised as an issue by students.

The review indicates that now the new management structure is in place there should be satisfactory progress in supporting students in the area of academic achievement.  This has not yet been achieved and remains an area of unsatisfactory progress.

In its evidence the report acknowledges that there is an increasing proportion of teaching that is good and some outstanding teaching was noted, although some teaching remains unsatisfactory. The visiting inspector also confirmed that the judgements of the senior management team with regard to the quality of teaching were appropriate and secure.

The new Personal, Social and Health Education programme is noted and the good work of new management team members in devising the scheme of work acknowledged.

The review concludes that the new Senior Leadership Team is well placed to drive forward further improvements. It also acknowledges that they have had a significant impact in a short space of time which augers well for the future.

Helpfully, two priority areas for further improvement have been highlighted.  These are “ensure high quality academic support for all students” and “strengthen the performance management of teachers so that they are fully supported to do the best for the students”.

Overall this is a positive endorsement of the hard work of all the staff to address the issues raised in the Inspection report of 2007; an acknowledgement of support the school has received from Councillors in enabling the creation of a properly formulated Senior Leadership Team; the support of the Community; and the increased involvement of parents in the education of their children.  There is still much to do but firm foundations for FICS to improve further so that it can be judged an outstanding school are now in place.
