RIFLE MAGAZINE AND ROUNDS FOUND IN STANLEY

Yesterday afternoon the Joint Service Explosives and Ordinance (JSEOD) unit in Stanley received a phone call from a member of the Public Works Department reporting what looked like a rifle magazines that had been seen lying amongst the undergrowth on the corner of Hebe St and Davis St.

Cpl Coney, LCpl Joseph and Pte Beston of the JSEOD carried out a recce of the area and discovered a very heavily corroded rifle magazine with fifteen 7.62 rounds still inside.  There were a further three 7.62 rounds found nearby.

Officer Commanding Armament Engineering Flight, Flight Lieutenant Tony Francis praised the swift work of his JSEOD team and said that it is almost certain that this find dates from the 1982 conflict.

‘Although the magazine and rounds are badly damaged we are 90% certain that they would have belonged to Argentinean forces.  It is a reminder to us all that ordinance from 26 years ago can still work its way to the surface.  My team are always standing by to assist, and we are grateful to members of the public who remain vigilant and contact us promptly to deal with any potentially dangerous material.’

The magazine and rounds have been removed to a safe place and are awaiting destruction.

Members of the public can contact Stanley JSEOD on 22228 0r 22229 if they wish to report suspected explosive material.
