An article in Friday’s edition of LaPrensa Austral has stated that a new “Antarctic Terminal” will be located at the Airport in Punta Arenas.  Located in a refurbished old terminal, the El Terminal Aéreo Antártico is hoped to be a focal point of air traffic between Antarctica and the rest of the world, with all countries in South America using the terminal as a hub for Antarctic air traffic. Punta Arenas Councilwoman, Eugenia Mancilla, said “The new project involves local government as well as the private sector.”  She is hopeful that the new terminal will be helpful to the region’s economy.

Tenders for the work are going out in September for the project which is expected to cost $9 Million.  Besides refurbishing the old terminal, the runway will be lengthened, there will be a now tower and better car-park facilities.

It was announced on Friday that British Antarctic Survey will be flying from Punta Arenas from now on.
