POLE TO POLE YACHT VISITS STANLEY
By J. Brock (FINN)
An aluminium schooner named BLIZZARD has arrived in Stanley to await a replacement crew member. The poles in question are magnetic poles located in the oceans around Greenland and Canada and around Antarctica.
The BLIZZARD began its journey at the Magnetic North Pole located at 78.30N and 69W and will continue to the Magnetic South Pole located at 63.2S and 138W before finishing the cruise in Sydney, Australia.
The crew consists of Dave Pryce (Australian), 1st Mate Miles Wise, who presently is in hospital here in Stanley,Charlie Beringer (British), Richard Kirkham (New Zealand), James Hooper, Rob Gauntlett, and John Dwyer.
Their intention is to go between the Magnetic Poles and observe the natural environment. It was in the Arctic where Rob Pryce fell through the sea Ice – a true indication of global warming. When they were not under sail they used bycycles and dog sleds to get from place to place.
Beginning in Greenland on 08 April 2007, the team have been to New York City and cycled through Ecuador and the Andees before reaching Punta Arenas, where they boarded the yacht for the Southern Ocean leg of the journey.
