Councillor Tony Leo to Attend Seminar
Councillor Tony Leo left St Helena yesterday to attend a seminar in Scotland. This will be the 19th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Annual Parliamentary Seminar in Scotland. The seminar takes place from 28 October to 3 November and this year’s theme will be “Strengthening Parliamentary Democracy”
The seminars are intended to be intensive learning exercises in parliamentary matters and will be attended by representatives from across all nine CPA regions.
Most of Councillor Leo’s time will be dedicated to attending various sessions to discuss parliamentary and democratic issues, and this will provide an opportunity for delegates to share experiences. As a result, St Helena should gain an insight into how it could do things more effectively. The seminar will also allow Councillor Leo to meet with other delegates, gain support for the Island, and promote St Helena as an investment and tourism destination.
Councillor Leo will first travel to Ascension Island then fly to the UK. Thereafter he will travel to Scotland, arriving there around 26 October.
While Councillor Leo is away from the Island, he will also be taking the opportunity to visit the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. In addition, he will be attending the Prime Minister’s Question Time where Members of Parliament, who are not Ministers, will ask questions of the Prime Minister.
This will be the second time for Councillor Leo to represent St Helena at a CPA event. He last represented the Island at Quebec, Canada in 2005.
Councillor Leo is a member of Legislative Council and a member of the Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee.
