Craft Specialist Visits the Falklands

By J. Brock (FINN)

The Reverend Andrew Johnson, an Anglican Minister and Shackleton Scholar, has been visiting the Falklands in his capacity of a trainer for people interested in crafts.  He has been to Saint Helena to help with lace making and to try and find a market for the produce.  Now, in the Falklands, he has, thanks to the generosity of Fortuna Limited, set up a training centre in the warehouse on Philomel Hill where the Falkland Wool Centre was located.

The training sessions are open to all who are interested in improving their skills from 1000hrs to 1700hrs from Monday to Friday and 1300hrs to 1600hrs on Sundays.

Rev. Johnson’s forte is weaving but he also does spinning as well as wool dying.  He held a demonstration in the FICS during the craft fair and has been to the schools.  In the Senior School a vat of indigo dye is being used as a science project.  He has also been to Darwin and next week he will go to Dunnose Head to teach classes and, no doubt take away a fountain of knowledge about wool.

On Monday, 01 October there will be an open house at the Wool Centre.  Rev. Johnson leaves the Falklands on October 2nd.
