SHELCO PROJECT GAINS APPROVAL IN PRINCIPLE

The Governor in Council has decided in principle that the overall balance of public interest would be in approving St Helena Leisure Corporation’s (Shelco’s) applications in respect of land at Broad Bottom and near Salt Spring. This approval in principle under the Immigrants (Landholding) Ordinance is subject to conditions which seek to ensure that the land will, subject to planning and other approvals, be used to create a development with five star type accommodation and related facilities as proposed by Shelco.

Shelco has welcomed this decision by the Governor in Council and fully recognises that St Helena Government wishes to see Shelco’s development open as soon as possible after the completion of the airport. The next steps will be for St Helena Government and Shelco to look at processes to ensure that work relating to matters such as planning approval, approved investor status, infrastructure improvement and work permits can be factored into a realistic timetable for both parties.
