Anthony Thomas-Crowther Returns from Overseas Training
After attending various courses in the UK on vehicle inspections, Anthony Thomas-Crowther has now returned to the Island.
Anthony is employed as an Assistant Vehicle Inspector and undertook a number of courses in the UK with different agencies. This led to him receiving passes of 100 percent, 95 percent, 93 percent and 86 percent in his overseas examinations.
He commenced his training with George COULL of CERTEX where he received training in examining cranes. This makes him qualified in this field. “This training was both theoretical and practical,” said Anthony. “At the end of the course I did practical and written examinations and I also did a one-day course on the examination of wire rope.” Practical and written examinations were also done at the end of this course and passes of 100% were achieved.
Following this, Anthony travelled to Manchester where he received training with the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency, (VOSA). VOSA provides a range of licensing, testing and enforcement services with the aim of improving the roadworthiness standards of vehicles.
With VOSA, Anthony embarked on a three-day Nominated Testers Course, which allowed him to learn to use the National Database for testers, and learn about inspection procedures and standards. This covered vehicles from classes one through to seven (motorcycles, quadricycles, cars, minibuses). Here, Anthony took more written and practical examinations.
The next stop was Bristol where Anthony commenced training in both Public Service Vehicle and Heavy Goods Vehicle inspection procedures and standards. This training was also delivered by VOSA and required written examinations.
As well as receiving formal training, Anthony was able to accompany Enforcement Officers on motorway patrol where Heavy Goods Vehicles were taken off the motorway for examination. He said “This was very interesting as I was allowed to examine the vehicles in the presence of an Enforcement Officer and was surprised to see what defects were actually present on some of the vehicles and what action was taken by Enforcement Officers.”
He concluded: “Overall I enjoyed all of the training courses.” He is now implementing his newly acquired skills and is passing his knowledge on to colleagues at the Vehicle Inspection Centre.
