Falklands : Sunny Mid Winter Swim Well Attended
Submitted by Falkland Islands News Network (Juanita Brock) 27.06.2006 (Article Archived on 11.07.2006)

June might not be the warmest Falklands month but 133 people took advantage of this for charity.

SUNNY MID-WINTER SWIM WELL ATTENDED

By J. Brock (FINN)

The South West Atlantic Mid Winter Swim (SWAMS) took place at Surf Bay on Saturday, 24 June 2006.  While briskly cold, the sun shown and the wind was down on the day.

One hundred and thirty-three swimmers braved ice-cold water on the day.  On the beach there was a fire as well as hot chocolate provided by the Seamen’s Mission and a Barbie and tents provided by Hillside Camp.  The Gun Club donated the use of a generator and tables.

Money collected went to The Falkland Islands Overseas Games Association (FIOGA) and the Seamen's Mission..  A group of walkers had donation buckets with them throughout the walk from Stanley, which began at 0930.  There were collections on the beach and registration fees as well.

Attractive olive green tee shirts with yellow and white lettering were available to all who took part in the swim.

After the swim many of the participants went to the Victory Bar where Cathy and Ally Jacobsen had mulled wine in abundance to help warm everyone up.

At present it is not known how much was collected for the charities but FINN will report the figure when it is known.  People with money to turn in can drop it off at the Seamen’s Centre, the Stanley Leisure Centre or MP Travel at Mount Pleasant complex.
